           Teaching Modules

The following modules were developed to serve as a resource for educators interested in teaching GPS theory and concepts.  Each module consists of the following three components: 1) Pre-lab experience to emphasize GPS theory and concepts, 2) Classroom materials that can be adapted and integrated into existing courses, 3) A "hands-on" experience incorporating field and post-field exercises.

The information below briefly explains the objectives and target audience for each module.  Realize that each module is modifiable to different age-levels and for different applications.

Teaching Module 1: Basic GPS Theory and Operation

This module is a basic GPS navigation and earth measurement exercise designed to introduce GPS capabilities.  It is intended for students completing a general education course in geography or related Earth Science, and introduces GPS as a tool in coordinate positioning, orienteering, and navigation.

Teaching Module 2: GPS/GIS Data Integration

This module is targeted for students completing a GIS course in natural resource or socioeconomic geography or related fields, and emphasizes the integration of GPS data with other spatial datasets within a GIS, along with the application of analysis techniques using GPS-collected data.

Teaching Module 3: Data Capture for Precision Mapping

This module is designed to address the importance of precision GPS equipment and accuracy-oriented field procedures in spatial data capture for cartography, emphasizing the importance of accuracy issues involving mission planning and data collection techniques with the GPS receivers.

Teaching Module 4: Attribute Data Collection and Sampling Design

This module is targeted for field methods courses in geography or related disciplines and focuses on GPS/GIS integration as a tool in managing field data collection through GIS-enhanced sampling strategies.  The module exposes students to procedures for navigation, mapping, and attribute collection using a GPS receiver and to the use of GIS for organizing and managing GPS data collection.
